REDFLY Mobile Companion

REDFLY Mobile Companion

This looks like a really slick device for those with Windows mobile powered smartphones on the road – the REDFLY Mobile Companion.

REDFLY Mobile Companion (cell phone not included ;?)

It’s basically a laptop-style 2 lb keyboard and screen that connects to your Windows Mobile phone via USB or Bluetooth and uses it as the cpu/os/applications for you when you’re on the road.  In return you get an 8" screen (800×480), a larger keyboard, a touchpad and a VGA port to plug into projectors for presentations (presumably using pocket Powerpoint and the like) and 2 standard USB ports.  Since it’s just using your smartphone, there’s no boot time to deal with…instant on.

I’m not sure whether browsing the web at the (admittedly higher than a smartphone) 800×480 screen would be any more acceptable or not.  1024×768 would be much more appealing to me as most sites typically target that as the lowest resolution supported for the general masses.  It would be interesting to see if the browsing experience is noticeably better or not with IE mobile at this middle-of-the-road resolution.

If you interface to it via the USB it’ll also charge your phone for you while you’re using it.  They claim up to 8 hours of battery life.

Devices purported to be supported (ooh…that rhymes) are:

  • HTC Tilt
  • Palm 700w/wx
  • Sprint Mogul / Verizon XV6800
  • Samsung SCH-i760

I called about getting a "demo" unit to take it for a test run but they would only allow me to get in on the "Pilot" program…wherein they would charge me $499 and, in return, I could have one of the first units.  These are brand-spankin’ new, just rolling off the assembly unit, so there’s not a lot of people with experience with them (read buyer beware – I haven’t seen one in real life).

My immediate question was "What if I don’t like it" – they didn’t have an acceptable answer – basically I’d have a beautiful $499 paperweight as they’d only allow replacement returns for damaged units.  No way to return it if it doesn’t live up to your expectations.

Anybody got $499 that I can borrow???  {Warning – You might get a beautiful red paperweight in return.  ;?)  }

Supermileage Team from Mater Dei High School, Indiana takes 1st Place in Shell Eco-Marathon Competition

Supermileage Team from Mater Dei High School, Indiana takes 1st Place in Shell Eco-Marathon Competition with 2,843 MPG!

A high school team from Evansville, Indiana has taken top honors in this years 2008 Shell Eco-marathon Americas.  Students from Mater Dei High School wracked up an impressive 2,843.4 mpg with their "6th Gen." racer – winning the $10,000 grand prize in the Combustion Engine competition.  Penn State – University Park took first in the Fuel Cell/Hydrogen category (1,668.3 mpg) and the Purdue Solar Racing team from West Lafayette took first in the solar category with 2,861.8mpg.

A PDF with the final results for all categories can be found here.  Video of the participants follows…

Suddenly a Prius doesn’t sound so special anymore.  This brings to light something that all of us have known for quite some time…we’re not doing squat when it comes to engineering efficient cars!  I just have to scratch my head when I see Honda or Toyota rolling another hybrid out and the sales guys jumping up and down about "how much horsepower this baby’s got".  When you look at the gas mileage, it’s usually at or below the non-hybrid version of the same car!  Come on guys, let’s get with it and start using this technology to create useful and EFFICIENT cars…not sports cars.  With some 90+ percent of our time behind the wheel being spent getting to and from work, it’s efficiency we need.

I’m waiting with baited breath {does baited breath smell kinda fishy? } for the PHEV’s (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) to start coming out so I can get one to do my morning commute.  If everything works out as I expect it will, I’ll use about a tank of gas a MONTH as I should be able to run on battery power 90% of the time.  The gas engine should only kick on when I head out on the highway.

Come on auto industry…you can do it!

Silverlight Developer Center – Yahoo! Developer Network

Silverlight Developer Center – Yahoo! Developer Network

Now I’m not one for startin’ rumors about the possible Microsoft/Yahoo! merger…but if you’re looking for a good resource on how to get started with Silverlight, head on over to the Yahoo! Developer Network.  {Hmmm…coincidence?}

Lots of useful links to developer resources and tutorials.  Not to mention downloadable posters of the Silverlight 1.0 Class Diagrams

Silverlight 1.0 Class Diagram - downloadable from Yahoo! Developer Network

I’d download one and put it on the wall, but then I’d have to take down my vintage Charlies Angels poster to make room and that ain’t gonna happen.

While you’re over there, make sure and scope out the Yahoo! User Interface Library (YUI) – a free collection of javascript library utilities that you can use in your own web projects.

TonyPratt.com is an awesome photo site

TonyPratt.com is an awesome photo site

I am quite grateful to Tony Pratt for taking time to share his photos online at his TonyPratt.com site.  The photos that he is able to capture and share with us are a wondrous reminder of the natural beauty right here in lower Delaware.

Who knew that we had flying squirrels just outside the door?

Or that Piping Plovers were real and not just an elaborate plot by park rangers to keep us out of certain areas of Cape Henlopen State Park

And that the " albino deer" in the park was real and not just a story that I made up? (See son, I wasn’t making it up!)

Tony’s site is definitely worth a look-see.  Take your time and explore the many links or just browse back chronologically…you’re sure to find some amazing pictures.

Melodyne – Direct Note Access

Direct Note Access from celemony_

Pretty awesome technology that allows you to "identify and edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material".  This will be quite the game changer when it comes to using note samples and the like and adjusting them to exactly suit your needs.  Definitely worth a look see.

Click the picture above or here to scope out a video demoing the magic.

Thanks to G. Andrew Duthie for the blog entry that introduced me to it.

Chickens in Kauai

Chickens in Kauai

We’re finally back from a family vacation in Kauai (one of the Hawaiian islands).  This was our first time there and the climate, views and beaches were fantastic!  We pretty much tried to do it all…ziplines, geocaching in the interior and coastal areas, helicopter tours…the works.  We had a blast!

One interesting thing that we didn’t plan on were the chickens.  Living in lower Delaware (part of the DelMarVa chicken capital of the world), we’re no stranger to chickens…but we don’t usually see them running loose.  We saw them at the beaches, heard them going to town from 4:00-6:00am every morning, and played "chicken" with them as we drove around the island.  Since the condos around those parts are pretty much designed for a free-flow exchange of air all the time, with nothing but screens and adjustable slats between us and the outdoors, we were serenaded on a daily (morningly) basis.

The word from the locals is that when Hurricane Iniki slammed Kauai back in 1992, it released all of the chickens that the Polynesians and Europeans introduced as well as the Filipino fighting cocks that were caged in the islands interior.  They all started intermingling and voila – chicken central.

Other than the early morning awakenings, they were pretty innocuous.  Going about their business and not giving us much thought.  One nice benefit of having them around, though, is that they are a pesticide-free way to keep the insect populations under control.  We did a tour of the Steelgrass Chocolate Farms while we were there and they now see them as a positive influence for their efforts to introduce cacao trees on the island.  If you go to Kauai, definitely take the kids down for the chocolate tour.  You’ll get about an hour and a half of fascinating education on the various plants on the farm, get to taste about 10 different delicacies from sugar cane to exotic tropical fruits, and the finale is a demonstration on how cacao beans are transformed into chocolate and a taste testing of some of the worlds finest chocolates!  We had a bunch of kids with us and they all enjoyed the hike around the farm and the tasty treats.

Sprint Mogul ROM Update

Sprint Mogul ROM Update

I pulled down the new ROM update for my Sprint Mogul phone/pda and installed it this morning.  The Mogul (aka the XV-6800 on the Verizon network) is an HTC device powered by Windows Mobile 6

FINALLY…the onboard GPS functionality has been enabled, allowing you to much more precisely locate your position and route yourself using Google Maps for Mobile, Live Search and other Mobile apps like Street Atlas 2008’s handheld edition that comes on the DVD.  If only I’d had this when I went to Hawaii last week.  It would have made GeoCaching much easier as I wouldn’t have had to mess with an external bluetooth GPS that I carted over.

I hear that EVDO Rev. A is also now supported with this updated ROM, but i can’t test the EVDO Rev A in Slower Lower Delaware though.  I’ll have to wait until I head north next and see what kind of performance I get in the "big city" of Newark.

One other neat feature is a drop-down in the top right-hand corner that lists the running Mobile apps to easily switch to them.  It also shows a red X to the right of each so you can kill them from the home screen.  Nice.  You used to have to go to Settings and Memory and go to the Running Programs tab to do the same thing.  Much nicer having it on the screen and not having to buy and install a third-party app to do such a common-sense thing.

Now I can always find myself (well…physically at least)…

Mix 2008 Conference Session Videos Online

Mix 2008 Conference Session Videos Online

Like 99.9999% of the rest of you, I couldn’t afford the time or money to hit Mix 2008.  Fortunately, videos have been posted for all of the sessions.  You can either browse through the listings here and play them directly from the site or you can click the "download" link under any of them and pull down a WMV, iPod or Zune version for offline viewing.

I think this is going to finally push me over the edge to buy an 80Gig Zune.  I don’t have a mongo music library or the like that would justify the purchase and I’m quite happy with my little Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player that I use to listen to my podcast lineup.  I love the fact that the Zen takes a single AAA battery, so carrying spares to keep me going on the road (about every 18 hours of play or so) was pretty cheap and easy.  Justifying a Zune was always a pretty tough sell with my financial advisor (read wifey).  If you look at the numbers, however, I think the ~$250 for a Zune plus being able to peruse all of the training sessions at Mix is much cheaper than the airline ticket, conference fee, meals and hotel costs that I would have incurred by going to Mix.

I thought about purchasing the ever-so-slick iPod touch, but at over twice the price (~$499), that would be an even tougher pitch to you-know-who.  Plus I’m told that the Zune (at around $248 or less if you do some searching) does a really nice job with playing back pretty much any video and it supports podcasting to boot (my next endeavor if I ever get time).  So either tonight or tomorrow, it’s down to (insert your favorite discount store here) to pick up a Zune and get it ready for an upcoming trip.
